It’s time to celebrate summer on the South Coast

KZN’s coastal tourism industry markets the province of the endless summer: temperatures remain mild all year on the east coast of SA and the warm waters of the Indian Ocean have a fanbase of locals who proudly boast that they take a dip in the sea every day of the year.

The sub-tropical climate, palm trees and lush vegetation, and the wide variety of unspoilt, secluded sandy beaches on the province’s lower South Coast makes this region one of most popular summer holiday destinations in the country.

From November, where daytime temperature highs average 25 degrees, (with ocean temperatures reaching 23 degrees), the South Coast starts to beckon and summer begins. This is the ideal time for hiking the inland nature reserve and long beach walks. End the day with sundowners on the decks of the area’s many local restaurants and enjoy the balmy evenings that signal the start of summer.

December is when the vibe gets real – lots of fun activities on the beaches to entertain children, festive Christmas carol events, live music and average daytime highs of 26 degrees. This is probably the perfect month to plan long lazy days on the beach: humidity often hasn’t kicked in yet, and the relatively wind-free climate means ideal conditions for a game of beach volleyball – or relaxing with a book under an umbrella if that’s more your style.

These are some of my favourite beaches to celebrate the summer season on the South Coast: offering plenty of space to spread out your towel, tidal pools for safe swimming, pedal boats, kayaks or paddle boards for hire keep the children busy, and beachside restaurants with spectacular ocean views mean an ice cream or a cold beer is always close by!

Umtentweni

Umtentweni Beach is a peaceful coastal escape, ideal for families and visitors wanting to enjoy a quieter beach experience. The surrounding coastline and nearby river and lagoon environments provide opportunities for kayaking and canoeing, while the beach itself is popular for swimming, fishing and leisurely walks.

Jaxx in the nearby village offers a deck where you can enjoy cocktails and a fabulous menu offering everything from casual breakfasts to seafood and family-friendly dining. The coastal setting makes Tweni an ideal starting point for exploring the southern section of the Hibiscus Coast.

St. Mikes

St Michael’s Beach, affectionately known as St. Mike’s, is a favourite among holidaymakers and water-sport enthusiasts. Situated at the mouth of the Umhlangeni River, it offers opportunities for paddle boating and enjoying the calmer waters around the river mouth. The beach is also popular for surfing, bodyboarding and swimming. After a morning in the water, head to C-Bali Restaurant for seafood, sushi, burgers and refreshing drinks, all enjoyed in a relaxed beachfront setting

Uvongo Beach is undoubtedly one of the South Coast’s most spectacular coastal attractions. Its famous 23-metre waterfall plunges into a deep lagoon, creating a beautiful setting for pedal boating and kayaking.

Rent paddle boats and enjoy a unique perspective of the waterfall from the water. The beach also offers swimming, surfing, bodyboarding and rock-pool exploration.

For a meal with a view, Pavilion Restaurant overlooks the beach and lagoon, serving pizzas, pasta and seafood.

Ramsgate Beach combines beautiful sandy shores with a family-friendly atmosphere. Pedal boating is a popular lagoon activity, while kayaking and canoeing provide opportunities to explore the surrounding waterways.

The beach is also ideal for swimming, fishing and beach picnics. When it comes to dining, Blue Lagoon is a popular beachfront restaurant and cocktail bar, while The Waffle House is a much-loved South Coast landmark for freshly made waffles and sweet treats.

Southbroom

Southbroom Beach offers a more tranquil coastal experience, surrounded by lush vegetation and natural beauty. The nearby Imbezane Lagoon is ideal for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding, the perfect way to enjoy the peaceful waterways and surrounding scenery.

After an active day, enjoy an evening of Mediterranean-inspired cuisine and beautiful estuary views at Trattoria La Terrazza, or visit Flavours Restaurant for an unforgettable fine dining dining experience.

These five beaches showcase the laid-back coastal lifestyle that makes the KZN Lower South Coast such a special destination. Whether travelling with family, friends or as a couple, there is something for everyone to enjoy along this spectacular stretch of coastline.
