Autumn splendour on the KZN South Coast

March marks the official start of autumn in the southern hemisphere, and for those parts of the world where the heat of summer is harsh and the humidity unrelenting, this season means the advent of cooler days, and mild, balmy nights.
It’s my favourite time of year on the south coast of KZN – still hot enough for dips in the ocean, sunny outdoor days to top up your summer tan, and warm nights to braai or eat on the terrace of a restaurant with a great ocean view.
Spanning the area from Amanzimtoti to Port Edward, the KZN South Coast is one of South Africa’s most diverse holiday regions. From golden beaches and world-class dive sites, to rich cultural encounters, rolling sugar cane fields, and natural wonders deep inland, this stretch of Indian Ocean coastline delivers something special for everyone – from family getaways to romantic weekends for couples wanting a relaxing mini-break.
The autumn months —between March and May — offer a perfect blend of late-summer warmth and autumn coolness, ideal for both water-based activities and inland exploring. Wildlife is active, and the sea remains warm for swimming, surfing and diving well into May.
Autmn also brings Easter, and one of the best times to plan a beach holiday in the province where sub-tropical weather means the festive vibe returns with the visitors from Gauteng.
Evenings can be spent sipping sundowners on the beach, watching fishermen clean their catch, or indulging in fresh seafood at a local eatery with ocean views.
Sampling the fresh seafood is compulsory

No South Coast itinerary is complete without sampling the fresh seafood — from prawns and calamari to kingklip and reef fish straight off the boat. Local cafés and seaside restaurants conjure up everything from casual fish and chips to elegant coastal fine dining experiences. My personal favourite is Fish on the River at Spiller’s Wharf, Port Shepstone, for fresh food, laid back vibes and river views. 58 Kilometres of golden beaches

One of the biggest attractions of the KZN South Coast is its stunning beaches — 58 kilometres of long sandy stretches, washed by warm Indian Ocean currents. From family-friendly swimming spots to surf breaks and quiet coves, there’s a beach for every mood.
Surfing is a way of life
Surfing is a way of life here, and locations such as Umzumbe and St. Mikes are beloved for consistent swells and friendly waves suitable for beginners and intermediates alike. Surf schools dot the coastline, offering lessons and board rentals.
Dolphin and whale watching
As autumn rolls in, the waters become active with marine life. Dolphins can often be spotted playing near shore, while humpback whales begin their southward migration from May onward — making boat cruises and shore-based watching breathtaking experiences.
Kayaking, SUP and snorkelling

Rivers, estuaries, and tidal lagoons along the coast offer sheltered waterways perfect for stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, or simply snorkeling in calm waters.
Whether you want gentle seaside strolls, paddling at sunset, or catching your first wave, the South Coast’s beaches deliver a soothing, scenic backdrop for every type of sun lover.
Underwater adventures

For underwater explorers who enjoy scuba Diving and snorkelling, the South Coast is a world-class destination.
About seven kilometres offshore lies Protea Banks, a legendary reef teeming with marine life. This submerged shoal is famous for encounters with shark species — from Zambezi (bull) sharks to scalloped hammerheads — and is widely regarded as one of the most exciting diving spots in the region.
While spring and winter draw huge schools of marine species, autumn still offers vibrant ocean life and warm conditions ideal for experienced divers. Aliwal Shoal Dive Centre & Lodge provides guided expeditions and safety training.
If you’re not adventurous enough to brave the deep, closer to shore, sheltered reefs and tidal pools make excellent spots to explore colourful fish, sea stars, and more.
Inland hiking trails

Inalnd from the coast, the South Coast’s natural landscapes are equally spectacular. As the region cools down in autumn, it’s an excellent time for hiking, birdwatching, and immersing yourself in nature.
Mpenjati Nature Reserve near Trafalgar is a tranquil spot where riverine forest, coastal grasslands and estuaries meet. Hiking paths wind along the Mpenjati Lagoon, and birdwatchers will delight in sightings of osprey, kingfishers, plovers and more.
A short drive from Port Shepstone, scenic spots like Oribi Gorge offer dramatic views and breathtaking trails. Visitor can walk alongside waterfalls, follow forest paths, and soak in panoramic vistas of rugged cliffs and rivers.
Near to Port Edward, the Umtamvuna Nature Reserve provides a spectacular backdrop for tranquil walks, bird-watching, and the chance to spot indigenous wildlife.
If you prefer beach walks, the Beach-to-Beach Adventure Hike connects several Blue Flag beaches via coastal forests and estuaries — a favourite with both locals and visitors to the region.

Practical tips
- Beaches: Always swim between the flag areas for safety and check local conditions.
- Marine activities: Book diving and boat trips in advance — especially around holidays.
- Transport: A car makes exploring easier; many nature spots and inland trails lie beyond walking distance from coast towns.
- Weather: Coastal breezes may cool down in May, so pack layers for early morning or evening outings.
Whether you’re chasing waves at dawn, or watching the sun melt into the Indian Ocean, the KZN South Coast between March and May invites you to embrace its rhythm, colours and spirit. From sunrise to starlit nights, this coastal jewel of South Africa offers an unforgettable blend of adventure, beauty and relaxation.
